St. John’s NFLD – New Irving Oil Marine Gas Oil Terminal

Location: St. John’s, Newfoundland
Client: Irving Oil

Project Description

In order to increase the capacity at their Marine Gas Oil (MGO) terminal in St. John’s Harbour, Irving Oil constructed a modern marine terminal. The terminal which was constructed at the site of a former decommissioned wharf will expand Irving’s ability to service mostly supply vessels within the offshore oil and gas industry.

The design included recommendations for both land and marine structures including:

  • A rock socketed combination retaining wall,
  • A driven pile supported berthing platform,
  • Rock socketed pile and rock anchored bollards,
  • Rock slope stability assessment,
  • And shoreline slope stability review.

Proponent’s Responsibilities on the Project

Responsibilities included developing geotechnical investigation program to suit the needs for the proposed terminal, develop and coordinate multiple marine and land based geotechnical investigations, perform a pre-construction full scale pile driving feasibility study with a Pile Driving Analyzer.

Key Responsibilities included:

  • Complete 19 marine boreholes and 9 land based boreholes as part of the geotechnical investigation for the various conceptual designs. Our work included various phases of investigations and design options to optimize the final design and construction costs to the client’s needs.
  • Perform a full scale pile driving study using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) to assess drivability and capacity for the various pile options and toe reinforcement details.
  • Conduct laboratory testing of soil classification and uniaxial compressive strength of rock core.
  • Perform a rock slope assessment of the on-shore rock slopes at the facility.
  • Prepare a complete geotechnical report summarizing our findings and providing recommendations to the designer for multiple design options for both the marine and land based aspects of the facility.
  • Perform geotechnical review of rock socketed pile construction, and PDA testing of driven piles during construction.

Relevance of the Project

Our involvement in the new MGO terminal at both the design and construction phase of the project demonstrates our knowledge and experience through:

  • Planning, coordinating, and safely completing geotechnical investigations in a harsh marine environment on schedule and on budget.
  • Compiling the relevant information from geotechnical investigations, geological maps, bathymetry surveys, and local contractor capabilities to provide relevant and cost effective recommendations.
  • Close working relationships with the owner and designer in development of the final design.
  • Providing unique geotechnical solutions suitable for the project site conditions and constraints.
